When a fire breaks out in a home or business, flames are not the only culprit for damage. Ever-present smoke can cause many problems for weeks on end. Smoke damage can destroy a property’s value, stability, and safety if not appropriately treated.

 What does Smoke Damage Mean?

Smoke damage is damage to your property caused by smoke. It comes in many different types. It can encompass physical devastation, but invisible smoke damage can reside in small particles in the air. Factors like the unique type of gasoline used to begin the fire, substances broken throughout the process, and location plays crucial roles in deciding severity. There are four different types of smoke damage:

  • Protein residue
  • Dry smoke
  • Wet Smoke
  • Oil/Fuel Residue

 Protein Residue

You typically find protein residue when a kitchen fire occurs. It is present when organic materials dissolve during a fire. This can cause discoloration on wood or painted surfaces. Protein residue is hard to spot as it is invisible; however, an experienced technician can spot it.

 Dry Smoke

Dry smoke takes place in a high-temperature fire. Its texture is powdery and very fine, making it one of the more accessible types of smoke to clean. Unfortunately, dry smoke can easily fall into small surfaces like cracks or holes because it is so fine.

 Wet Smoke

Opposite to dry smoke, wet smoke occurs when a low-temperature slow-burning fire occurs. These fires leave behind a strong smell, making cleaning a longer and more tedious process. Thick, black, and sticky residue is typically left behind when dealing with damp smoke.

Oil/Fuel Smoke

Oil smoke happens when an oil-based substance is burned. These types of fires are the least common but leave a dark, sticky residue is left behind.
